Why two hands is 1.6, not 2

We sell KYLA Performance in pairs, one handle for each hand. A reasonable person asks: is two hands twice as good as one?

No. It is about 1.6 times. Here is why, and why we sell pairs anyway.

The palm is a heat exchanger, and the body sets the flow

A palm cooling device does not cool your hand. It cools the blood passing through your hand. The palm is built for this: hairless skin over a dense bed of arteriovenous anastomoses, vessels that open when you are hot and route blood to the surface to shed heat. A cool surface against the palm takes heat out of that blood, and the blood carries the loss back to the core.

So the rate at which a palm cooler removes heat is limited by two things: how fast heat crosses from skin to device, and how much warm blood the body sends to the palm in the first place. A good device gets the first one out of the way. Then the body's blood supply is the ceiling.

The ceiling is shared

The blood that reaches your two palms comes from one heart and one central circulation, and the body regulates it as a whole. Open a second heat-release surface and the body does not simply double the supply to the periphery; it redistributes. The second palm gets less than the first would have on its own, and the first gets a little less too.

Physiologically the result is that cooling both palms removes roughly 1.6 times the heat of cooling one, for a device strong enough to reach the ceiling. For a weak device that never gets near it, a second unit roughly doubles a small number. This is a modelled figure from the literature on peripheral blood flow, not a KYLA measurement, and we treat it as such.

Why we sell pairs anyway

Two reasons, and one thing a pair does not do.

1.6 is still a lot more than one. If the rest between efforts is where you recover output, sixty percent more heat out in the same ninety seconds is worth having.

Symmetry. Athletes hold a cooler between sets with both hands because that is how you sit and rest. One hand cold and one hand warm is not a position anyone keeps for ninety seconds.

What a pair does not do is last longer. Both cores are spent at the same time, because you hold both at once; a pair does not cover more of a session than a single would. Each handle is sized for a session on its own. The second handle buys heat per rest, not minutes.

What this means for comparing devices

When you compare palm coolers, count heat per rest, not hands. Any device delivers everything it can through the palm it touches; adding a second palm adds a second surface but not a second body, which is why the gain is 1.6 and not 2. Two units of a weak device add up to about twice a small number, which is still a small number. The question to ask of any device is how much heat it moves from your blood in one rest, which is the whole point of palm cooling between sets. (Passive or battery-powered palm cooling.)
